The 100th anniversary of Machu Picchu
A big celebration is about to resume in Peru. On July 7h 2011 Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders, is having its 100th anniversary of rediscovery by the american explorer Hiram Bingham. A century after this historic finding, Machu Picchu has become one of the places that millions long to visit at least once in their lifetimes.
This anniversary is very special for Peru. It´s a moment for strengthen the proud about their ancestors, the astonishing Incas that ruled a vast and wild territory with the force of their hands and the power of their minds and culture. It´s also a great opportunity to create new possibilities for a faster growing, establishing more business channels, specially through the tourism.
News and comments about this coming celebrations are beginning to fill the media corridors. But one thing is for sure: The organizers are planning to make something really huge, majestic and unforgettable. Massive events all over Cusco -the ancient inca´s metropolis- are scheduled. They will express the joy and proud of a people with a great history.
One event that seems to be already scheduled is a school contest about Machu Picchu. Students from all over the country will be able to participate, working on a monograph about the ruins. The judges will select 50 of them, and the fortunate authors will be invited to enjoy the great festival of Machu Picchu.
As an exclusive member of the New Seven Wonders, Machu Picchu will receive the visit of representatives from the other wonders´ countries. This event will be organized by the N7W in close coordination with Canatur (National Chamber of Tourism) of Peru.
But a true Festival wouldn´t be it without music. The organizers are confident that some of the biggest music stars of all times would be delighted to participate. Although no names has being officially confirmed, it´s being heard about some conversations with personalities like Sting or Paul McCartney.
This is an event of global interest. That´s why it will also be used to pressure the University of Yale to return the archaeological pieces of Machu Picchu they still have. It would definitely affect the international image of Yale if it doesn’t give them back on time for the anniversary.
The Peruvian Government is including on its big information campaign an approaching to Yale´s graduates to get their support on this legitimate cause. Now that the New York Metropolitan Museum has reached an agreement with Egypt to return 19 pieces of Tutankhamon, it would be illogical for Yale to stay stubborn.
But despite this impasse, we are truly sure the 100th anniversary of Machu Picchu´s rediscovery will be one of the greatest cultural events of the modern world, bringing Peru and its megalithic and magic legacy even higher in front of a hundred million souls from all over the planet.
